A Brief History of Besakih Temple
You must be asking who built this temple for the first time? At first I didn’t know either, but after reading a history book about temples in Bali then I know the answer. The builder of Besakih Temple is a Hindu religious figure from India who has long settled on the island of Java, his name is Rsi Markandeya.

It is said that at that time there was no Bali Strait as it is now, because the island of Java and the island of Bali were still one and not separated by the ocean. Because of the length of the island that we call now as the island of Java and the island of Bali, this island is named Dawa island which means long island.

In the beginning, Rsi Markandeya, the founder of this temple, meditated on Mount Hyang (Mount Dieng in Central Java). After a long period of meditation, Rsi Markandeya received a revelation to explore the forest on Dawa Island from the south to the north.

At the place where the forest was cleared, Rsi Markandeya planted a jug containing metals and holy water. The metals include gold, silver, copper, iron and bronze. The five metals are called Pancadatu in Balinese society.

In addition to the metals, a gem called Mirahadi is also planted, which means the main mirah. The place where this jug is planted is called Basuki which means congratulations. The name Basuki or selamat is given because the followers of Rsi Markandeya are safe in carrying out their duties in the forest. With the passage of time the name Basuki changed to Besakih.
