Tugu Yogyakarta
Tugu Yogyakarta is one of the must-visit tourist attractions during your vacation in Jogja. Because this location is indeed distinctive and can provide its own entertainment. After a long time standing, this Jogja monument has become even better with the existence of several buildings after being renovated.

The first attraction is the historical story. This monumental building was established in 1755 although the initial form was different from what is currently seen. When it was first built, this building was also named Golong Gilig.

Gilig is a cylindrical tube shape while Golong is round or spherical. From this name, it can be imagined that this monument was originally cylindrical and the top was round. This shape also has its own meaning which is the purpose of this building.

Like every monument built with a specific purpose, Tugu Yogyakarta was built as a monument to illustrate “manunggaling kawula gusti”. The meaning is the unity between the people and the leader for a common goal. This goal relates to the urge to jointly fight against Dutch colonization.

In 1867 there was a natural disaster of an earthquake that caused various damages including the collapse of this monument. The period after the collapse of this monument became a transition period that slightly shook the spirit of unity. Jogja is indeed one of the earthquake-prone areas due to its strategic location.

Renovations were only carried out after the collapse until in 1889 the architectural form of Tugu changed drastically. The initial cylindrical shape of the building turned into a square block. The peak of the monument which was originally round turned into a cone shape. The height of the monument which was originally 25 meters became only about 15 meters.

This change cannot be separated from the intervention of the Dutch who also “helped” renovate this building. In this new form, there is a shape that marks who is involved in rebuilding this monument. Until then this proud monument has the title “De White Paal” which is Dutch for Tugu Pal Putih.

The location of Tugu Yogyakarta is very strategic, which is connected to the line from the zero kilometer point of Jogja to the north. So it is very easy to find this tourist spot. This location indeed serves as a longitude marker from north to south, where the north is Mount Merapi while the south is the South Sea of Jogja through zero km, the square and the Jogja palace.
