teradesa.com Karimun Jawa Island is an archipelago in the middle of the Java Sea which is included in Jepara Regency, Central Java. The Karimun Jawa archipelago as a whole consists of 27 islands and only 5 of them are inhabited.
The islands offer beautiful and charming marine and natural attractions for domestic and foreign tourists.
The name Karimunjawa itself comes from a local folklore. It is said that Sunan Muria threw his naughty son, Sheikh Amir Hasar, to an island that is kremun-kremun in Javanese, which means vague.
Because it looks kremun-kremun, this island is called Karimun island and now the island is familiarly known as Karimunjawa.
The island, which was made a National Park in March 2001, is home to coral reefs, mangroves, coastal forests and hundreds of species of marine fauna, more than 200 of which are ornamental fish. The islands are also home to several rare animals such as the White Chest Sea Eagle, hawksbill turtle and green turtle.
Another specialty of the islands is the Dewandaru plant which is only found on the islands and nowhere else. You are not encouraged to pick and bring this plant home when visiting Karimunjawa because according to local folklore if you do so, the ship you are traveling on will sink.
The islands, which mostly have fine white sand, are indeed a natural beauty that always attracts tourists.
Location of Karimun Jawa
The Karimunjawa Islands are located about 83 kilometers north of Jepara city. The islands can be reached by boat from either Semarang or Jepara. There are two boat options to reach the islands, fast boats and economy boats.
Fast boats usually depart only once a week from Semarang’s Tanjung Emas port, usually every Saturday and return every Sunday afternoon with a journey time of 2-3 hours. Economy boats usually depart every other day from Jepara’s Kartini Beach port with a journey time of around 6 hours.
The voyage always depends on the weather and waves of the Java Sea. If the weather and waves are not favorable, the transportation authority may delay or cancel the voyage to the islands.
Apart from using a boat, the Karimunjawa islands can also be reached by airplane from Ahmad Yani Semarang airport to Dewa Daru airport on Kemujan island with a travel time of about 30 minutes.
Between the two transportation options, the ship is the more popular choice among tourists.
The Karimunjawa Islands are indeed very beautiful, with clear water and white sand beaches alone enough to attract tourists.
Coupled with the abundance of marine animal species and some rare animals that can be seen in this archipelago, the attractiveness of this archipelago increases. With the marine and natural beauty that Karimunjawa offers, the archipelago has several nicknames such as Vacation Island, Paradise of Java and Caribbean van Java.
